Emma Roberts is a GCC Registered Chiropractor and has completed a long rigorous training in the early 1990's to learn how to treat both People and Animals using gentle Massage, Ultrasound, Manipulative, Visceral and Craniosacral Therapies such as the McTimoney, Corley and Upledger Techniques. Emma has been treating People - adults, children and babies and Animals such as Dogs and Horses with muscular back pain, pelvic joint misalignments/vertebral subluxation complex and soft tissue sports injuries professionally since 1996.

She is very experienced and brings with her a wealth of knowledge enabling her to find the true cause of Physical pain and lack of mobility and to prescribe exercises and to give lifestyle advise to support her patients progress.

Emma has ridden and owned horses all of her life and was lucky enough to compete on them in many equestrian disciplines in her youth. She has also worked in her youth as both an event groom and racehorse groom with sole charge of valuable horses who competed at International level. Emma has been on a Master Saddlers 'Saddle Fitting Course'and although she does not sell saddles she is able to spot back pain relating to use of the wrong shape of saddle tree or even the wrong type of saddle pad/numnah or girth for each particular horse.

Your horse will receive an initial consultation in which he will have an assessment via both palpation (hands on examination) and visually his gait will usually be analysed, before and after his treatment session, in order to identify and correct, mobility restrictions.

Emma usually spends around 40 minutes per visit and your horse will receive a very thorough whole body examination in which typically muscle wastage will be identified and misaligned skeletal curvature will be corrected (even including work to release the jaw, skull, poll and throat!). He should be box rested wherever possible immediately after his treatment until the following morning and in some cases he may need 1-3 days off from being ridden.

The average horse with mild to moderate discomfort will typically require 2 initial sessions spaced a fortnight apart followed by a monthly follow up appointment for 3 months. It is advisable to then rebook the horse for maintenance sessions  once every 3-6 months to allow Emma to help your horse maintain the benefits of his initial course of treatment.

A horse in acute or severe pain with Veterinary referral, will typically require treatment on a weekly basis for 6 weeks and a strict regime regarding rehabilitative exercise, 'TLC' and restricted turnout.

It is a good idea to exercise/turnout before the appointment but try to keep the horses coat as dry and clean as possible and to give him just a small 1/4 feed before she arrives so he is not hungry or overly full and the remaining 3/4 feed after his session.

Most horses love the treatment and Emma is confident, kind and calm in the handling of horses with aggressive tendencies and is experienced in handling horses of any age, breed or size. She prefers to treat horses with  the owner/rider holding their leadrope and she may need to stand on a stool if the horse is over 15.2hh. She often treats them outside in the yard, rather than inside the stable, weather permitting.
You should be prepared for your horse to become slightly more energetic, responsive and possibly even playful as the course of treatment progresses and this is a natural expression of your horses happiness, as he will feel more fit and have less discomfort.
